Youth Music Day

Thursday 23rd july
1.30-8.30pm
Sign me up!
For the first time we are holding a whole day especially for musically-interested 13-18 year olds!  We'll have a variety of musical activities happening all day, which you can opt in and out of with no pressure, as well as chill-out places, games, free pizzas and soft drinks.

Musical activities on offer include:
  • Beatboxing workshop with The Hobbit (2015 World Beatbox Champion) - anyone is welcome to come and give it a go!
  • Songwriting workshop with Lady Nade (winner of UK song of the Year in the 2022 UK Americana Awards) - bring a song you're working on, or just come and find out how to start writing songs
  • Finger-picking guitar workshop with Declan Zapala - for people who can already play guitar, make sure you have it with you!
  • Group jamming session run by David Massey - bring your instrument/voice and join in an informal jamming session
  • Classical corner with Emily Andrews - if you have a piece to work on, or want to read some duets/trios, this will be a quiet, non-judgemental space to do just this!

Other activities
  • Free pizzas and snacks
  • Free soft drinks
  • Chill out spaces
  • Games
No parents or younger siblings allowed - this day is yours!

Until...

At 6pm the gardens we'll allow in some parents/public, for the 6.30pm concert. Taking part in the youth day does not automatically enter you to take part in the concert but if you have a band (average age under 18) or are a singer songwriter under 18 then you can sign up for a slot, open-mic style, once you have entered for the youth day.

There will also be some bands from WEMA's pop and rock school, as well as demos from the pros: Lady Nade, Declan Zapala, The Hobbit and David Massey.

The event is being organised in collaboration with Emersons Green Town Council, whose youth work team led by Shea Stew will be on hand during the day to help out, chat and make snacks ;-)

FAQ

How much does it cost?
Everything is FREE ! But we are asking a £10 deposit on sign up, which we will return to you on the day in cash.  This is to avoid people signing up and not showing up, as places are strictly limited.
Do I have to play an instrument or sing?
Yes, it's a music day, so please bring your instrument or voice.
Do I have to do everything?
Not at all - you might choose to do the beatboxing workshop, sit out of the other workshops and join the group jamming. It's up to you. We hope you will join many activities as it'll all be amazing, but equally we know you might be happy to spend time with friends in the sun after the end of school, and some activities may not be your thing - totally fine.
I'm 18 - Will there be alcohol?
No, this is an alcohol free day. Equally no smoking or vaping.
I don't like pizza - can I bring food?
Of course.
I want my band to play in the concert but they're not all coming to the day, is that ok?
Yes sure, as long as some of you are coming to the youth day, more can join (say if they're under 13) at 6pm, to play with you in the concert. Once you've signed up for the youth day, there'll be an option to sign up for a slot in the concert.
I'm under 13 - can I perform in the concert?
There are two ways this can happen. 1) If one of your band members is over 13 and is coming to the youth day, they can sign up their band to perform in the concert, and you can join them at 6pm. 2) If you are part of WEMA's Pop and Rock School in Chipping Sodbury, your band will already be performing. You can arrive from 6pm.
Do I have to stay for the concert?
Not at all. We hope you will, but if you've got all you want from the day you can go at any time.
